GNU/Linux & FOSS

Hi! I 'switched to Linux'™ around August 2024, so I am pretty new to it all. It has since become a big interest of mine, and I thought writing about it as a beginner might be helpful to others that are considering switching, as Windows 10 support ends in October of 2025.

GNU/Linux

I currently use Linux Mint 22.1 - Xfce edition on my main computer. Mint is very new user friendly and highly compatible, and Xfce has quickly become my favourite desktop environment, mostly for it's customization and the way it presents information clearly.

On other spare computers in the house I have; Debian 12 on my Asus Vivobook, antiX 32-bit on my old Toshiba Sattelite, and Bodhi Linux on my home server Dell Optiplex 7050 micro.

All distros I have tried out/use regularly are: Linux Mint, antiX, LMDE, Debian, Bodhi Linux, MX Linux, and a couple others I've opened in VMs for a few minutes (Ubuntu, Zorin OS).

I am fairly rooted in the Debian/Ubuntu derivative camp, they just seem to have the most support, both in relation to hardware/software integration, and userbase troubleshooting posts online. They also do the jobs I want perfectly fine, I have no need to move on to more cutting edge stuff. I am also ethically aligned with the more community driven, non-corporate distros like Mint, antiX and Debian :)

FOSS

I have always used a bunch of free and open source software, even on Windows, but am using many more alternatives now on Linux, and on my phone with F-Droid and related. Any posts about the above will be linked here.
